TN MPs meets Manmohan Singh as Karunanidhi heads another delegation on Dec 4

NEW DELHI – Mounting pressure on the Indian Central government over the Eelam Tamils issue, a delegation of MPs from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Tuesday sought India’s intervention for an immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

The MPs belonging to DMK, Congress and PMK met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and impressed upon him to ensure that the all the relief materials sent by India reached the suffering Tamils immediately. As of now section of the relief materials only reached them.

The delegation was led by senior DMK member and Union Minister T R Baalu. The MPs also said that India cannot remain a “mute spectator” to the ongoing violence against Tamils.

Later speaking to reporters the lawmakers said the Prime Minister shared their concern on the issue.



Meanwhile the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is leading an all-party delegation to Delhi on December four to meet the Prime Minister seeking his intervention on the issue.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai on Monday, Karunanidhi said that all MPs would unanimously urge Manmohan Singh to ensure a truce in Sri Lanka as decided in last week’s all-party meeting held in the state.

He termed the sufferings of the Sri Lankan Tamils as that of a community and called for a united stand from all political parties to fight for their cause. He said he would be meeting the Prime Minister on December 4 as scheduled.
