Maradana police on Tuesday arrested two trade union activists of health sector on charge of contempt of court. Police sources said the two activists were arrested while disrupting the employees who did not heed the trade union orders. Colombo high court on Monday issued an order to 44 trade unions to halt all trade union actions for 14 days from today after hearing a petition filed by a heart patient.

National Peace Council (NPC) of Sri Lanka, a Colombo based peace group, condemned mass arrests of Tamils. "Hundreds of Tamils residing in Colombo have been arrested in a crackdown reminiscent of the attempt to evict temporary Tamil residents from Colombo in June this year," the NPC said in a press release on Monday.

Canada has decided to deport a former Sri Lankan police officer who sought asylum here because of "his complicity in crimes against humanity committed against a civilian population in Sri Lanka". Authorities here say that the individual concerned, Mr Kasturiarachchi, was part of a force that has committed "systematic" and "widespread" abuses "on a regular ongoing basis".

The Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Koïchiro Matsuura, on Monday condemned the deadly attack on a radio station run by the rebel Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan army planes struck the Voice of Tigers (VoT) radio station near Kilinochchi in the north of the country on the afternoon of November 27, killing five of the station's staff and injuring more than five other people, according to a news release from UNESCO.

One soldier of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) was killed and two others were injured in an incident of claymore blast occurred around 8:00 p.m. at Oorani area in Valveddiththurai. Police said unidentified persons triggered a Claymore device, hidden near a SLA camp at Oorani, targeting a SLA convoy transporting troops and supplies from Nakarkoayil in Vadamaraadchchi east and other areas in Vadamaraadchchi to Palaali. Earlier, SLA stopped using this route due to frequent attacks on its convoys and recently it is using the alternate route to Palaali where the attack took place on Saturday night.

A bomb was recovered from in front of residence of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Jaffna district parliamentarian, MK Shivagilingam, in Colombo around 8.45 a.m. on Monday, according to website of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence. A news was posted in the website that mentioned police and air force bomb disposal team acting on civilian information have found a parcel bomb at Jawattha, Colombo 05 on Monday morning.

Sri Lanka’s ceasefire monitors expressed deep concern that civilian casualties in the country's civil war have returned to the level set before a truce was signed five years ago. The Nordic ceasefire monitoring team said 49 civilians had been killed and 60 injured in violence from November 25 to 28, referring to two bomb attacks in the capital and aerial and ground attacks in rebel-held areas.
