British Commonwealth Office has warned British nationals to refrain from visiting North-East of Sri Lanka, as the situation there is not conducive for peaceful travelling. Political violence in those areas and the present political climate accompanied by the local government election meetings, demonstrations and rallies also contribute to the volatile situation, the Commonwealth Office has pointed out. From the western tip of Jaffna for 12 nautical miles into sea and westwards up to Puttalam has been declared as no go zone. |

Not long ago it was alleged that Iraq possessed huge stockpiles of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) that posed a real and imminent threat to the world; the accusation was based on hearsay, deliberate misinformation and a good dose of wishful thinking all put together and called ‘intelligence.’ Similarly now, the LTTE and its members are being accused of practising Mass Intimidation and Extortion (MEI) that threatens the Tamil Diaspora (and by implication the Western Countries where they live), by a HRW Report that claims to have researched the matter. “I understand that today the Human Rights Watch will release a groundbreaking study on the penetrating extortion regime developed by the LTTE. The study examines the LTTE’s extensive efforts to amass illegal funds in North America and Europe through the Diaspora in order to fund their operations in Sri Lanka and abroad including illicit military capacity……… It would be extremely useful if prestigious institutions like the IISS (International Institute for Strategic Studies) could analyse this report and make recommendations on international action to reverse this trend. |

The doubt as to whether the talks held in Geneva to fully implement the Cease fire Agreement would pay divends has now risen. The conflicting activities of the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) are not conducive for peace. The activities of the GoSL military guided Tamil paramilitaries are aimed at derailing the peace initiatives. |

Almost a month after the Sri Lankan government, concluding its first direct talks with the Liberation Tigers in three years, agreed to disarm its paramilitary units, absolutely nothing has been done. Admittedly, there are fewer killings than in the months preceding the Geneva talks. |
