Sri Lanka: UNP democratic group claims it initiates dialogue to remove Ranil
The group in UNP, known as democratic group, claimed that it has started a process of negotiation with some senior leaders of the party to remove Ranil Wickremesinghe from the party leadership as well as the post of leader of the opposition. Sports and Public Entertainment Minister, Gamini Lokuge, said the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka is going from bad to worse and a national government should be formed to save the country from this crisis.

Sri Lanka: SLAF jets bomb Pooneryn: Mobile phone service partially restored in Jaffna peninsula

Kfir jets of Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bombed Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) controlled areas in Pooneryn on Friday afternoon. Prior to dropping bomb, the SLAF fighters were seen hovering in the sky of Jaffna peninsula from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., sources in Jaffna said.

Sri Lanka: EU-India talks focus on Sri Lanka situation

The high-level talks between European Union and India that concluded on Friday in New Delhi focused, among other topics, on the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka, a EU statement said. The meetings between European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was also attended by Indian foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee, trade minister Kamal Nath and national security advisor M. K. Narayanan.

Sri Lanka: MOD's video release "out of taste" - diplomat
COLOMBO (SNM) -- Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence's (MOD's) decision to publish CCTV footage showing a bomber killing herself and a gunmen of the EPDP paramilitary group is "out of taste" a senior official attached to a western diplomatic mission here said. The footage, which was apparently authorised by the defence hierarchy for public release has shocked and outraged much of the diplomatic community.

COLOMBO (SNM) -- Twin bomb scares at the Treasury Building and Thalawathugoda rocked the Sri Lankan capital on Friday. Panic stricken shoppers ran for cover and road traffic came to a standstill in the city centre. However, after hours of painstaking searches, bomb disposal squads confirmed that there were no explosives in either of the vicinities.

Sri Lanka: 30, 000 joined army in 2007
COLOMBO (SNM) -- Just over 30, 000 unemployed Sinhalese youth joined the Sri Lanka Army during the first 11months of 2007, Military Spokesman "Brigadier" Udaya Nanayakkara told the media on Friday. He added that country wide recruitment drive would continue till December 20, as the army is still short of personal.

Sri Lanka: The new threat-well-armed and trained Muslim youth rallying round Pillayan
In a shocking revelation the Daily Mirror has learnt that some 150 well armed and trained Muslims youths have increased their activities in certain areas of the east. The situation has worsened with the break away of Pillayan from Karuna Amman a few months ago. Reports said that one time close associate of Karuna, one Suresh – a Muslim paramilitary leader who was with the LTTE when Karuna was with the Wanni faction a few years ago had joined Pillayan.

Sri Lanka: Hundreds of people pay respect: Funeral of media personnel killed by SLAF held in Kilinochchi

People of Vanni paid their last respects to two of the three media personnel of Voice of Tigers (VoT) who were killed in the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bombing on the radio station in Kilinochchi on Tuesday. People, both male and female, of all ages paid respects to the remains of Ms. Iasaivili Chempiyan and M. Suresh Limbio whose mortal remains were kept at Kilinochchi Cultural Hall at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.
