Sri Lanka: Sunday Leader Tamil journalist files FR petition
A Tamil journalist, Arthur Wamanan, working in the Sunday Leader English weekly Thursday filed a Fundamental Rights Violation petition in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka seeking the court to declare his arrest and detention on October 24 was illegal. On October 24, Mr. Wamanan was taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel, based on a telelphone complaint by the Sri Lankan Minister of Enterprise Development following his article exposing Mr. Wijeratna of misappropriating government funds.

Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka trips over own policy on Pakistan status in Comonwealth
Sri Lanka reversed its decision on supporting the suspension of Pakistan from the Commonwealth, after admitting that its foreign minister was unaware of the government's official policy. The cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake met in emergency session to reiterate its position that it does not support the suspension of Pakistan from the Commonwealth,Deputy Foreign Minister Hussain Bahila said.

Sri Lanka: Publishing house razed in Sri Lanka
The Committee to Protect Journalists condemned an arson attack on a publishing house in Sri Lanka today that destroyed the printing press of three newspapers critical of the government. At least 12 unidentified masked men stripped publishing staff of their cell phones at gunpoint before starting the blaze and fleeing the scene in the early hours of the morning as one of the three papers went to press, according to Free Media Movement spokesman Sunanda Deshapriya. The press in Ratmalana, a suburb of the capital of Colombo, was located in a high security zone tightly controlled by Sri Lankan government security forces.

Sri Lanka: Unidentified men hurl firebombs at SLFP dissident MP Sooriyaarachchi's Colombo residence
A group of unidentified men riding in a motorbike hurled petrol bombs at the house of former minister Sripathi Sooriyaarachchi, who broke away from the SLFP. The attackers hurriedly fled away after hurling petrol bombs when security guards of the residence, located at Austin Place, Borella in Colombo, opened fire at them, Police said.
