The gender gap index is compiled taking women's participation in economic, public affairs, education and health standards into consideration and Sweden has bagged the first place in this year's index.

A Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) political division member who sustained injuries when LTTE's Political Head and Chief Negotiator Brigadier S.P. Thamilchelvan was killed last Friday in a Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) targeted bombardment, succumbed to his wounds this Friday, LTTE officials in Ki'linochchi said. The Tigers have conferred Major rank to the political division member Sivalingam Aathavan alias Selvam.

A report from the International Crisis Group says that lasting peace in Sri Lanka will require understanding of Sinhala nationalism and its grievances
The report, entitled "Sri Lanka: Sinhala Nationalism and the Elusive Southern Consensus," argues that the Sinhalese are not opposed to a fair deal for the minority Tamils but that they will continue to challenge attempts to produce a political settlement by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse until Sinhalese nationalism is taken more seriously, the International Crisis Group reported.

U.S. Government on Thursday donated radar-based maritime surveillance system and several Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) to Sri Lanka Navy. U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Robert O. Blake in a ceremonial function at Trincomalee expressed U.S. Government's hope that the radar system and the inflatable boats would help the Sri Lankan Navy to interdict arms shipments to the LTTE.
