Sri Lanka: Indian Foreign Minister refuses to criticise Colombo for abrogating CFA

Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, in an interview to CNN-IBN news channel, Sunday admitted that India had "scrupulously avoided" being a party to peace negotiations in Sri Lanka. The Indian FM who last week had ruled out any military solution to the ethnic strife in the war-torn island, on Sunday, failed to criticize Sri Lanka for abrogating the ceasefire. Questioned whether Colombo's decision to abrogate the ceasefire agreement was a "mistake," the minister replied that "any country that takes action against terrorists is free to do so within their legal system."

Sri Lanka: Fonseka vows not to leave war to successor

Sri Lanka Army Commander Lt. Gen. G.S.C Fonseka, due for retirement this year, has claimed that he would not leave the war to his succeeding commander, at a New Year party hosted by him Friday evening to select local and international journalists at his residence at Bauddhaloka Mawatha in Colombo. Fonseka was being tactfully upbeat as news of an explosion inside Fort Railway station threatened to dampen spirits at the cocktail party.

Sri Lanka: 17 SLA, 5 Tigers killed in Pandivirichchaan - LTTE
A two pronged ground movement by the Sri Lanka Army was thwarted at one front by the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam after almost 6-hours heavy fighting in which 17 SLA soldiers and five LTTE fighters were killed, according to LTTE Operations Command in Mannaar, media sources in Ki'linochchi said. Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) helicopters landed at least 10 times, transporting wounded soldiers from the SLA defence line.

Sri Lanka: LTTE, the most dangerous, deadly, says FBI
In a campaign "celebrating a century," U.S.'s Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) said of the Liberation Tigers: "Needless to say, the Tamil Tigers are among the most dangerous and deadly extremists in the world. For more than three decades, the group has launched a campaign of violence and bloodshed in Sri Lanka, the island republic off the southern coast of India." The website added that LTTE's "ultimate goal is to seize control of the country from the Sinhalese ethnic majority."

Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka's UN mission refutes newsreport on losing voting right at UNHRC
The Sri Lankan mission to the United Nations office in Geneva, on Thursday, refuted a front page story by the Colombo based news paper, Daily Mirror, which said Sri Lanka had lost its powers to vote at the UN Human Rights Council (HRC). Urging the paper to publish an apology, the Sri Lankan mission, in a statement said it is a full fledged member of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) with "all rights including the unfettered right to vote." Sri Lanka's two-year initial term as the elected member of the 47-seat HRC ends this year and a periodic review of the country is scheduled to take place between 5–16 May 2008.

Sri Lanka: SLMM Head of Mission meets LTTE Political Head as part of SLMM winding-up operation
Today at 9.00am, the SLMM Head of Mission, Lars Johan Solveberg, met the LTTE Political Head, B Nadeson, as part of the SLMM winding-up operation. The SLMM is in the process of winding-up its operation in the island by 16th of this month as ruled by the Government of Sri Lanka.

The LTTE Political Head handed a statement signed by him to the SLMM Head of Mission. A similar signed statement was also give to the Norwegian Foreign Ministry through the SLMM Head of Mission.

Sri Lanka: White van armed men abduct 3 Tamil civilians in Colombo
Armed men in military uniform arriving in a white van forcibly abducted Monday a father of three children at Mukaththuvaaram in Colombo, and in a separate incident a 30-year-old mother and her 5-year-old daughter are alleged abducted Tuesday from their house in Wathala, according to complaints made to Deputy Minister, P. Rathakrishnan and Wattala police by the relatives of the abducted persons.

Sri Lanka: SLN orders Mannar villagers to obtain photos of families
Commanders of Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) camps located in littoral villages in Mannar have ordered the residents living within the SLN's area of dominance to avail themselves to take photographs, residents in Mannaar said. Areas of Talaimannar, Nadukkudaa, Peasaalai, Vankaalaippaadu, Erukkalampiddi, Pa'l'limunai, Thaaraapuram, Thaalvuppaadu and Sunni Village are affected by the SLN order, sources added.
