Peace attempts made by the Government of Sri Lanka (1985-2006)

on a formula which urged the government to accept four principles including the right to self determination and the recognition of the north and east as the traditional Tamil homeland. However, the government rejected these demands. Analysts say that the LTTE and other Tamil militant groups came to the conference harboring the misconception that they would get the separate state of Eelam.

It is unfortunate that most foreign writers and journalists tend to describe the Tamil freedom fighters of Eelam as ‘terrorists’. The west has, particularly after the 7/11 incident in New York, USA, tended to describe any individual or organisation not with the establishment, as a terrorist or a terrorist organisation. Journalists and newspapers are happier with labelling individuals or organisations. If a label is not available, they are always ready to create a catchy label.

Independent observers from all walks of life conclude that successive Sri-Lankan Sinhala governments terrorise the indigenous Tamils in their homeland of the North and East of Sri-lanka for over 55 years since independence from colonial Britain in 1948. Though these reports are unbiased Sri-Lankan racist regimes scoff off these reports and call names after the writers of these reports. Some of the reasons for rebutting the charges are banal and idiotic.

While there are only two months for the government to submit the budget proposal in Parliament, it is compelled to collect a large sum of money by levying taxes. That is why the government had to submit 5 new financial bills. It was almost like a mini budget.

Amnesty International based in Britain has requested UN Human Rights Council to deal with Lanka in respect of flaws in preserving and protecting human rights. The sixth sessions of the United Nations Human Rights Council are to be held in Geneva next Monday. Amnesty International has appealed to all representatives in the UNHC to take the human rights situation in Sri Lanka quite seriously.
