Charged by the Brisbane City Council for damaging “significant vegetation”, in reality some bushes of grass and gum-tree saplings in my back yard, tried and convicted by a Magistrate in a potty little suburb in Brisbane, and awaiting sentencing on September 20, 2007, my mind is too confused to write a proper article on the terrible suffering of our Tamil people.

The delegates of the International Press Freedom Mission and the Reporters Without Borders, who visited Sri Lanka two months ago, travelled to many areas including Jaffna, met the media men serving in those areas personally, appraised themselves of the problems of those journalists and expressed their views on the plight of journalists in Sri Lanka.

The refugees in the north-east face never ending problems and are denied basic facilities. As far as the east is concerned, even if the people are resettled, normalcy has not returned. People, who were displaced following military operations had fled from their own villages abandoning all their belongings including cattle.

In 2003 a quarrel between two youths over a cap they were wearing led to clashes between two groups and ended up n the deaths of 27 persons. As a continuation of this murder a small girl was killed two weeks ago in a village in Kalutara district. Last Sunday 5 persons were killed following clashes between the underworld gangs.

Although the Ceasefire Agreement is said to be in force, it is a dead letter today. Military operations are pursued despite the declarations that there is a ceasefire. This duplicity can be seen in all matters. The government of President Rajapakse has been continuing military operations since it came to power.
