A top US official said yesterday that Sri Lanka would retain the continuing support of the US government based on the approach taken to the humanitarian situation prevailing in the country.

“The continuing support of the US government will be reliant on the means in which the humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka is addressed,” Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration from the US State Department Eric P. Schwarts said.

As the resettlement period approaches the 60?day mark, the Canadian Tamil Congress is releasing the first of its monthly situation reports tracking Sri Lanka’s progress in freeing and resettling its nearly 300,000 IDPs.

Sri Lankan Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP M K Sivajilingam has alleged that a few leaders from Tamil Nadu, both at the Centre and State are simply ignoring the massacre of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
 
Addressing a gathering at the inauguration of Tamilar Thanmana Pasarai at Red Hills on Sunday, he said that the most shocking thing was the projection of those leaders as the saviours of suffering Tamils in the island nation.

UK, US, Germany and France abstained from IMF voting: Britain signals unease with SL

Britain made clear its discontent over Sri Lanka’s treatment of Tamil refugees last night by abstaining from a vote at the International Monetary Fund to give $2.4bn (£1.46 bn) to the country, The guardian, UK reported. The US, Germany and France also abstained from voting.

Sri Lanka’s Army Commander General Foneska’s statement on recruiting 100,000 new recruits has raised fears, in the minds of Sri Lankan Tamil Observer groups, of systematic colonisation of the Tamil lands in the North and the East by the Sinhala army.  This fear is becoming a pre-occupation with these observers, as they mull over the issue of peaceful settlement of Tamil issue.
