Sri Lanka was back in the international headlines throughout the world. This was mainly on account of the Sri Lankan government's eloquent denunciation of the unilateral declaration of independence by the breakaway state of Kosovo. The government said it could set an unmanageable precedent in the conduct of international relations and the established global order of sovereign states and could thus pose a grave threat to international peace and security.

Retired Major General Wasantha Perera giving evidence in court against JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa in a defamation case last week was to allege the JVP had worked closely with the LTTE during the 1988-1989 period. Not only that, the retired General also accused the JVP of obtaining arms from the Tigers via the Hambantota District.

movement. This has been globally acknowledged
by governments and military experts.
Pirapaharan has lived to read his obituary issued by Indian and Sri
Lankan governments four times since the LTTE became a powerful player in Sri Lanka.

James Ross, Legal and Policy Director of New York-based Human Rights
Watch (HRW), in a hard hitting column appearing in the Tuesday edition
of the Daily Mirror, said the Sri Lanka government has failed to
"seriously investigate and prosecute those responsible for the horrific
abuses of the past two years – the unlawful killings, the
“disappearances,” the Karuna group’s abduction of children. The
cover-up is the government’s determined effort to keep the issue off
the international agenda."

The past few days must have been busy, to say the least, to the public relations managers of the GoSL. One is left with the question of how they are going to escape the critical eyes of the world, unscathed, after all these statements, that were followed by withdrawals and then by counter statements – all with the singular aim of hiding the military debacle of Anuradhapura.
