SINGHALESE REBELS BARRICADE THE UN STAFF IN COLOMBO
Singhalese rebels, sponsored by the Sri Lankan government, and organized by the Sri Lankan Minister of Housing, Construction, and Engineering Services and National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa, are at the UN premises in Colombo barricading the UN staff in the compound. Associate spokesperson for UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq at the press briefing today (06) said the UN is seriously concerned over the situation which prevented the staff and visitors to the UN office from entering or leaving the premises. Failing to respond to the conditions laid down by the commission, ended in loosing the GSP trade concessions for Sri Lanka as of August 2010, The European Union officially announced. The British clothing retailer, NEXT, has already stopped sourcing its garments from Sri Lanka, last week, because of the uncertainty of the continuance of the GSP+ duty concession from the European Union. NEXT is a British retailer, with its headquarters in England., and it is one of the United Kingdom’s largest clothing retailers, number three behind Marks & Spencer and Philip Green’s retail empire of Bhs and Arcadia Group. UN chief appoints Sri Lanka war crimes panel
UN chief Ban Ki-moon Tuesday set up a panel to investigate allegations of war crimes in Sri Lanka during the government’s war against the Liberation Tigers, a UN spokesman said. The three-strong panel would be chaired by Marzuki Darusman from Indonesia, the UN’s special envoy for North Korea, and hoped to complete its work in four months, AFP reported. The other two members of the panel are human rights expert Yasmin Sooka from South Africa and Steven Ratner, an expert in international law of war from the United States. Mr. Ban launched the investigation “to advise him on the issue of accountability with regards to any alleged violations of international human rights and humanitarian law during the final stages of the conflict in Sri Lanka.”
