The government of Sri Lanka has today threatened to train Islamic extremists from Al Qaeda as retaliation to the United Kingdom providing good governance training to the Tamil Eelam Police in 2003. Sri Lankan military said that it had 'arrested' a police officer who once served in the eastern town of Sampoor.

The European Union is planning to reintroduce a resolution on Sri Lanka before the UN Human Rights Council sessions in September, The Morning Leader learns. Informed sources said a resolution is currently under discussion within the EU and will be discussed among member nations before it is placed before the council. The EU presidency is currently held by Portugal.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in a letter to the consortium of banks from which the government hopes to raise a loan of US$ 500 million through a sovereign bond issue had stated, granting such a loan would seriously jeopardise the country's economy and that a future UNP government would not be able to honour the repayment obligations under it.

Meanwhile Two youths from Madduvil, Thenmaradchchi have been missing since 20th of this month while they were going to Jaffna town. They have been identified as V.Satheeskumar age 29 and K.Pratheepan age 32. They have not yet returned their homes, relatives said.

Sri Lankan military has setup procedures in Jaffna for the movement of military convoys in which regal respect is being awarded to it at the expense of all other civilian activities. When a military convoy is en-route, not a single civilian is permitted to on the road.
