Students, who have passed out from the Jaffna University Medical Faculty, are fearing that they may be victim of discrimination in case of getting appointment for internship. Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said a proposal to send Jaffna medical faculty students to hospitals in Jaffna for their internship has been forwarded to the Cabinet. He said the Cabinet will discuss this matter at its next meeting.

A group of under-aged cadres kept at Thirukkovil for handing over to the SLMM on Tuesday, were in for a surprise attack around 7.30pm Monday. Pavaiarasan, a senior leader of the LTTE had already submitted a list of names of 14 under-aged cadres to be handed over to the SLMM tomorrow at Amparai. These cadres were all born after 1990. Pavaiarasan said they were being handed over to their parents in the presence of the SLMM, as directed by Velupillai Pirapakaran, the leader of the LTTE.

Rev.Fr.Fernando, the Bishop of Kandy, states that Bishops of Sri Lanka will discuss the plight of the refugees in the north-east with President Rajapakse and the LTTE and strive to resolve their problems. He stated that it is a misery that several 1000’s of displaced people have been unable to earn their livelihood for several decades. It is also a misery that the education of the children of the refugees has been badly affected during this period.

Incidentally, the discussion comes just days after a local aid worker who was attached to the Danish De-mining Group was gunned down by unidentified gunmen in Jaffna. Thiagarajah, who declined to disclose details on the discussion, however emphasised that the government should take immediate steps and control the widespread killings and abductions occurring in Sri Lanka.

The CID on June 21, took into custody former Sri Lanka Air Force Squadron Leader, Nishantha Gajanayake in connection with the multi-million rupee abduction for extortion scam, a man closely connected with Karuna and his band of men. It was in fact senior UNP MP Lakshman Seneviratne who first revealed details of Gajanayake's connection with the abduction-extortion racket when he raised the matter in parliament on June 6.
