The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday said Norway's continued alignment with the EU list of banned individuals and organisations could cause difficulties for Norway in its role as "neutral facilitator in certain peace processes" stating that Norway will no longer align itself with any other list than that published by the UN. The statement further said that Norway wanted to intensify its involvement in various peace processes, with the recognition of the international community including the EU and the US, but wanted to avoid a situation that makes it difficult for Norway to have contact with any of the parties to a conflict. |

Exuberant firework displays and huge street parties have been marking the start of 2006 across the world. From Sydney to London, Moscow to New York, crowds of people have been cheering in the New Year. In Brazil, Rio de Janeiro held its biggest fireworks display, while revellers ignored bad weather to pack into Times Square in New York.
The US city of New Orleans said goodbye to 2005 with a jazz funeral procession for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

A British human rights worker kidnapped in Gaza with her parents intends to stay in the region, despite her ordeal. In a statement the family of Kate Burton said they are "glad the last few days are over" and that they were "in good health". They said Kate, 24, will continue her work with Palestinians, adding that the family now wish to be left in peace. The Burtons, of Newbury, Berkshire, were released unharmed on Friday after being held for two-and-a-half days.

Arab foreign ministers have condemned the Danish government for failing to act against a newspaper that published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. At the Arab League conference in Cairo, they said they were "surprised and discontented at the response". Islam forbids any depiction of Muhammad or of Allah.

Party colleagues of former Indian prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee say they are stunned by his decision to retire from active politics. Members of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) say they hope to persuade him to stay on and fight the next election. On Thursday, Mr Vajpayee told a BJP rally in Mumbai he would not stand and was bowing out of "power politics". Mr Vajpayee, 81, helped found the BJP and led a coalition government for six years until electoral defeat in 2004.

Spain's high court has sentenced an Eta member to 100 years and three months in prison for the murder of a socialist leader almost six years ago. Fernando Buesa and bodyguard Jorge Diez died in a car bomb attack in the Basque capital, Vitoria, in February 2000. The court said the case against Eta's Diego Ugarte Lopez de Arkaute had been proven beyond doubt, Efe reports.

The UN refugee agency has expressed "shock" after up to 20 Sudanese migrants died during an operation by Egyptian police to break up their camp.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, said there was no justification for the violence. Thousands of police stormed the camp - which was set up near UN offices in September - wielding truncheons and firing water cannon at the protesters.

At least 10 Sudanese migrants, including children, have died as Egyptian riot police broke up a makeshift protest camp in Cairo.Thousands of police stormed the camp, set up near United Nations offices in September, wielding truncheons and firing water cannon at the protesters.A stampede was reported as police forced hundreds of people onto buses. The migrants had been demanding that the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) move them to a country with better conditions.
