The Campaign For Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE), an election monitoring organization accredited under Sri Lanka's Election Commissioner, said Monday that election related violence in Anuradhapura district is on the increase, and that CaFFE has received 127 complaints from North Central Province (NCP) and Sabragamuwa Province (SP), CaFFE spokesperson Keerthi Tennekone said.

Fishermen recovered the bodies of two school students Monday around 8:00 a.m washed ashore on the beaches of Kaaththaankudi and Paalamunai in Batticaloa district, sources in Batticaloa said. The two students, along with three fellow students had gone to bathe in Puthukkudiyiruppu sea Sunday when the incident happened.

Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bombers attacked on Saturday a populated village, known as 'Redd Barna' settlement, in Visuvamadu after targeting an irrigation tank in the area. A 40-year-old civilian was killed and six wounded, according to medical sources. The SLAF has stepped up indiscriminate bombardment on civilian settlements as the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) fired artillery shells have targeted Mullaiththeevu and Akkaraayan hospital zones. At least five civilians were killed and more than 25 wounded in artillery and air-strikes carried out by the Sri Lankan forces in Vanni on Friday and Saturday.

Unidentified armed men opened rapid fire Thursday midnight on the main electricity transformer at Arasadi Chanththi in Karaveddi, Vadamaraadchi along Nelliyadi-Kodikaamam road, damaging the transformer and cutting off electricity supply to the above area, sources in Vadamaraadchi said.

Three youths were shot dead by unknown persons along Lucas Road in Panadura in Kalutara district Friday night around 8:45 p.m. while they were seated in a car, according to police spokesman Ranjit Gunasekara, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).

Official residences of Mullaiththeevu District Secretary (Government Agent) and the doctors of Mullaiththeevu hospital, located inside the hospital premises were hit by the shelling. The artillery barrage killed an 18-month-old baby and caused injuries to 16 civilians, including the GA, Ms. Imelda Sukumar, who was at her official residence and Medical Superintendent Dr. V. Shanmugarajah's wife, hospital officials told TamilNet. Meanwhile, the Director of LTTE's Peace Secretariat S. Puleedevan, blamed the Sri Lankan government for repeatedly violating the Geneva Conventions during its offensive.

A United States military jury sentenced Salim Ahmed Hamdan, a former driver for Osama bin Laden, to 5 year 6 months, making Hamdan eligible for release from custody in 5 months after taking into account the pre-trial incarceration, Washington Post reported. "The sentence was a stunning rebuke to prosecutors who had insisted on a prison term of atleast 30 years and portrayed Hamdan thoroughout the trial as a hardened Al Queda warrior," the paper said.
