It is regrettable that nobody shows any concern over the impact of the war on the economy of this country. Cultivation has been given up in the North-East. It was the east that met a large portion of the demand for rice but it is not the position today.

The agriculture was very successful in the North and the people were financially well off but now it is not so.

The agricultural life of the North has been very badly affected following the war situation and the displacement of the people.

If the people of this country fail to realize the serious impact of the war on the life of the country, then an economic crisis will be inevitable.

People in the Batticaloa district are very badly affected following the ban on the transport of fuel to the areas under the control of the LTTE.

There have been requests by the Batticaloa district agricultural organizations to lift this ban.

They have also demanded that the facilities offered to the farmers in the south under the Mahinda Chinthana must be made available to the farmers in the east.

Farmers in other parts of the country enjoy a lot of facilities from the government. They get compensation for any loss.

But, all these benifits and facilities are denied to the farmers of the North–East.

Therefore the government has a moral responsibility to solve these problems faced by the farmers of the North-East.
