Commentary: 'I am an orphan, not a child soldier. . . '

A ten year old friend of mine was cruelly raped by four Sri Lankan Sinhalese troops in 1997 in Jaffna. At that time she and her little brother were screaming and crying for help. Sri Lankan Sinhalese troops beat those two kids with the gun and murdered them. Where were these Human Rights people then?

Innumerable little girls were brutally attacked by these heartless Sinhalese troops. Is this not a violation of Human Rights?

Innumerable little girls were brutally attacked by these heartless Sinhalese troops. Is this not a violation of Human Rights?

A mother was being raped by Sinhalese troop’s right in front of her seven year old son. Put yourself in the place of that poor boy and think about how you would feel. Soon after that incident that mother committed suicide and the child was orphaned. Isn't killing his mother and taking away his right to live normally like other children not a violation of child rights? Where were these organizations then?

These troops bombed a children's school and killed hundreds of children as well as destroyed the school buildings. These troops took away these children's rights to a well education in mere seconds. Was this not a violation of child rights? How is the issue of child soldiers any more concerning than taking away the education of a child?

A mother was breast feeding her two year old baby. While she was doing so, shrapnel cut her neck and she died instantly. The poor child did not know and kept drinking. In separate incident, a child's father was kidnapped by Sinhalese troops even before the baby was born. Both of these children were left alone and a normal life thereafter seemed impossible for them. Did this not reach the ears of child rights groups?

I could provide countless situations and various writings and graphics of these incidents to anyone that is in doubt. The same 'protectors' of child rights that are voicing against the LTTE right now sat calm and did nothing to protect the same children then. Maybe if they had taken action when they were being raped and murdered, we would not be wasting time right now arguing about child soldiers. When these children are orphaned, would the Tamils as a community send them back to the same government to take care of them? Certainly not. These children have no other alternatives than to run into the arms of the LTTE. They have set up schools and orphanages to provide shelter, education, food and care. These are exactly the same rights that the Sinhala government took away from them.

You as a reader put your self in one of these situations. How would you react? Would you not want to protect your brothers and sisters from the same tortures that you faced? Or would you be thinking about child rights and just watch others being put through the same misery as you. If we had given these children's a good life and education, they would follow international child rights standards. But what the government did was take these away from them and teach them that those rights are only in paper. What then stops them from picking up arms to protect themselves and others?

What a cruel world we are living in. Here we have the government that is supposed to be taking care of these children taking away all the basic necessities of a child's life. Then we have the international community that is condemning the movement that is rescuing the children, and providing those necessities. Not only is this government abusing the rights of Tamil children in the North-East. Take a visit to the southern parts of Sri Lanka and you will see the amount of child labour, lack of schools, child prostitution, child pornography that exists there. It is funny how international human rights groups don't visit the North East but blame the Tamils for violations. On the other hand, they visit the southern parts and see what is happening there, but don't blame anyone for that.

Keep in mind what happened to these children. Realize who rescued them and gave them a normal life and also remember that there are millions of other children in the country. As these children grow up, what do you think they would decide to do?

Nice article Sathana.

All of your points make sense and really raise a question as to how sincere the world is on childs rights around the world. You highlight the hypocritic role played by the international community when it comes to the Sri Lankan ethnic problem.

I think the world does know what is going on and who is the bad guy but are keeping quiet as the tamils are facing a government. Governments only help other governments.

No group on this planet is perfect, so I believe we cannot sit here and pinpoint the mistakes of either side but we must look at what the side is accomplishing as a group. One is lashing out crime and terror towards its own citizens and one is trying to free its people and create a homeland on the basis of language.

I think what you written is very accurate and more than us sitting here and reading and making comments, your points should be brought up with the Western world and teach the international community what is going on in Sri Lanka with the children. Both in the North East and South.
I am fascinated about your point about the Sinhalese kids in the south. I have witnessed that in person and find it amusing that the government and international community is ignoring that but shouting at the LTTE for using child soldiers.

One last thing is if the LTTE forced these kids to join against their own will. They would not see the results they have achieved over the years.

This is not good writing sathana, To this become facts, you have to give name of the victims and the places with dates. With out these details, your story become a friction.

This is a good example of brain washing. I heard from lots of my Tamil friends who spent years in Jafna schooling, that, LTTE has often showed and told these type of stories to them to get them in to the Organization.

But, I can give you hundreds of these kind of stories with dates and names, where LTTE has massecured innocent villagers From Kent Farm to Tissamaharama (Yala) Just go to Wikipedia Free encyclopedia and put LTTE. End of the artical you will see all the crimes LTTE has done with the name, Dates and pictures.

Thank You,

One person says what the Tamils say is wrong and others are saying what the government says is wrong. As a Tamil, having witnessed what was going around me in my homeland, I am not ready at all to believe any Sinhalese media or their propaganda. They have hidden many things I have witnessed from the world.

As such, you are saying the exact same thing. You do not believe what the Tamil media says as to what is going on in Sri Lanka.

We both don?t trust each other. We don?t believe what the other leaders and media say. We do not get along. If this is not a strong indication that the two ethnicities should separate and mind their own businesses, I don?t know what is. We should work towards governing ourselves and having a good external relationship with each other rather than fighting over and over again and struggling to keep an internal relationship.

We cannot blame the Sinhalese people because, GoSL (Past and Present) have been brain washing them from their childhood for their political aspirations. If you refer the History, Civics or Social Studies books for students in Sri Lanka, Sinhalese students have been studying different story and Tamil students have been studying different story. W. Kannankara (Late Education Minister ? might be in 1940s or 1950s) introduced Education in Mother tongue was purposely for their Political aspirations and encouraged the Sinhala Buddhist Chauvinism. ?If all people had studied in English medium in Sri Lanka they would have been communicate each other easily and a mutual understanding would have been built up with all ethnic groups, there was no blood shed and there is no more blood shed?.

Dear Shantha,

You got a part right. No more these two communities trust each other as long as they live apart. But it was purely because of your tamil politicians and terrorists. They cultivated hate among two communities for their petty political gains and therefore created hell for normal people in the North and South.

Most of the Singhalees agree that, the making Singhalees language as only the national language is wrong. Also 95% of the Singhalees don't mind Tamil also becoming a national/official language and approve it. We Singhalees strongly believe that, all the civiliance in Sri Lanka have to have right to communicate with the govenment in their native Language. In this case we don't have any difficulty as we have only two major or wide spoken languages in Sri Lanka.

James, you have to get the facts right. It is not CWW Kannangara, who made the Singhala language, national language. It was SWRD Bandaranayake. Most of the Singahlees know that he is wrong in his action and do not approve it. But violance or killing innocent people is not the answer for it. What CWW Kannangara did was to facilitate poor students from rural villages (including Jaffna) to study in English by forming Central collages everywhere in Sri Lanka.

And importantly, we in south do not victimes of falls propaganda or brain washing. Our students in schools do not learn history which is written to support any political motives or propaganda. Those are extracted from indipendant sources confirmed and backed by fats like stone inscription or other ruins. A good example, the Nallur Kovil was built by a Singhala king called Gajabahu. It is not propaganda. It is fact. Because, it confirms by the verces sung by the prists at the Kovil ceramony. These verces clearly says that this Kovil was built by King Gajabahu.

But unfortunatly, Tamil Kids do not get opertunity to lern from indipendant sorces like kids in South. They are victims of falls propaganda to support ill motivated political movement. I can clearly see that from most of the comment made by some of young Tamils who often write to this web site.

Now, you all have migrated to the West and enjoying the freedom of experiencing and lerning from indipendant sources. There are few good boks about Sri Lankan history written by some German authors like Mueller and Wilhelm Geiger. Those are very good and very indipendent sorces (they were germans and had no reason for buise) of our history. Please read one of those books and get a good insight in to Sri Lankan History before comment any thing.
