government for covering up child abuse in the south Just because India tolerates child abuse, it is okay for the Sri Lankan government to do the same? He claims that the government has been trying for 36 years to curb child abuse in the south.
Well well well, are they that incompetentor are they plainly tolerant of this evil because of the tourist money it earns. What is more important to them, foreign currency or a determined effort to curb child abuse, which manifests itself for all to see? Are the Sri Lankan police forces in the south blind or do they cast their eyes toward the ocean while child abuse flourishes openly under their noses. Here are some quotable quotes from non Tamil sources. “10,000 to 12,000 children from rural areas are trafficked and prostituted to pedophiles by organized crime groups - [“Sri Lankan children for sale on the internet Julian West, London Telegraph, Oct 26, 1997] Sri Lanka is one of the favored destinations of pedophile sex tourists from Europe and the United States - [Global law to punish sex touristssought by Britain and the EU “The Indian Express November 21, 1997] 5000 to 30,000 Sri Lankan boys are used by western pedophile sex tourists in Sri Lanka "Sri Lankan Lankan activists", “Sri Lanka tightening screws on pedophiles - [Feisal Smith, IPS February 20 1998] In 1996 the government raised the age of consent from 12 to 16 years and made prison sentences ranging from 10 to 20 years mandatory for sex offenders. No arrests have been made. Campaigners criticize the moves as ‘cosmetic’ [{‘Sri Lankan children for sale on the Internet’} - Julian West,New Delhi London Telegraph Oct 26, 1997] “Police set up a national desk for child abuse. Eleven foreigners, mostly European were arrested. Most have either been deported, , jumped bail or been given minimum fines - [ Julian West, London Telegraph October 26,1997] “Swedish police seized 300 hours of film showing westerners exploiting Sri Lankan children in 1995 - [Julian West, supra October 26, 1997] 600 advertisements for Sri Lankan children , most, boys, appeared on the Internet in 1997. Child care experts in Sri Lanka warned that child prostitution was being promoted to foreigners on the Internet, making it one of the worst countries for child abuse. Local middlemen, mostly from Europe, are used to find children of the required age for pedophiles, whothen travel to Sri Lanka - [BBC November 8, 1997] In addition to child abuse, the government is guilty of permitting women to continue to accept employment in the middle east and elsewhere for foreign earnings, despite the fact that it is well known how they are abused and raped by their employers. Here is a quote on that subject “ The military and political situation in Sri Lanka has led to an increase in migration, which has made women extremely vulnerable to trafficking and prostitution - [Ingrain Sinha,Executive Director on Globalization and Human Rights SANLAAP] Perera then accuses the LTTE of child exploitation. What exploitation? Taking care of children made orphans by indiscriminate attacks on civilians by the Sri Lankan armed forces or by the Tsunami is child abuse? Returning them to relatives willing to take care of them is child exploitation?
The Sri Lankan government has not sent one penny of the donations intended for the victims of the Tsunami to the Northeast. The T.R.O. is the only organization that has helped the victims of this tragedy, which made thousands of women and children homeless. The American Red Cross which collected a total of 2.5 billion dollars for Tsunami relief, has not assigned one penny of it for such relief in the North East of Sri Lanka, claiming that the U.S. government has instructed them not to do so. The U.S. government, when pressed, has said nothing. This is humanitarian, not political assistance. None of these sleazy actions and operations have been accorded any international publicity to date. There is no proof that the LTTE recruited anyone under 15 as soldieries,an age permitted by the Geneva Conventions and relied upon by the U S and Sri Lankan governments to recruit people to their armed forces. The LTTE admitted that the Karuna group, who have been expelled, did indulge in such recruitment of soldiers under 15, but that is past. They do not act on behalf of the LTTE any longer. It is time the International community takes notice of these harsh realities without echoing the baseless accusation of the Sri Lankan government and joining the runaway train of accusers about the recruitment of child soldiers by the LTTE, without an independent review of the subject. Instead, the International commuunity gives the government a seal of approval by remainng silent on these abuses and asserting without justification that they are an enviable democratic institution. The U.S.government in particular insists on broadcasting this mythical impression despite the fact that the Tamils and all other ethnic entities and non buddhist religious groups were treated as undesirable outcasts by every Sinhalese Buddhist government since 1948. It is time that UNICEF, UNCHR, and other independent international organizations investigated these gross and unspeakable violations of children's and women's rights by successive Sri Lankan governments, This messy and chaotic situation cannot be allowed to go unnoticed, any more than that their claims to be a pristine democracy should be honored and dignified by leading nations like the United States of America.
