While the ceasefire agreement is in force, there have been direct confrontations between the LTTE and the government. On top of them, there were clashes between the Sri Lankan Navy and the LTTE in the sea around Vettrilaikerny. Following this incident, there were air strikes in Nagar Koil and Killinochi areas. There are also reports that a large number of civilians are fleeing from their homes due to shelling in the villages of Muthur east.

How can air strikes and shelling in villages in retaliation to a confrontation in the sea be justified? It must be understood that it is the innocent civilians that suffer as a result of such retaliatory tactics. This certainly cannot create a congenial atmosphere for peace.

All quarters including Japan’s Special Envoy Akashi have clearly pointed out the deplorable situation in which the country is placed consequent to these activities and counter activities.

It is true that the international community is closely watching these developments. Following each incident, Tamils are victims of retaliation. They are driven out of their villages. They become refugees.

International community has a great role to play in bringing peace to this land. The government must act with a sense of responsibility to ensure the right climate for talks to resume.

If war breaks out again, the consequences can be serious. That is the reality.
