Colombo, Sri Lanka: People are shocked at the claymore attack on the bus lon Thursday, claiming the lives of sixty-four people including women and children and injuring seventy-nine commuters who are warded at a hospital for medical treatment.

Such acts of violence need to be condemned by one and all. All parties must unite and strive genuinely to find peace and to put an end to such abominable violence. It must be remembered that the sufferings of the people are unbearable. The incidents of violence at Vankalai, Trincomalee and Sampoor are continuing, causing great hardships to ordinary people.

It is said that the government has launched air bombardments on the LTTE targets in Mullaitheevu, Killinochi, Sampoor and other areas following the Keppitagollawa incident. The onus to protect all communities lies with the government as all are citizens of this country. Therefore the government has a sacred responsibility to ensure the safety of all communities.

It is essential to take steps to diffuse the tension that prevails today. The country faces a crisis that is unprecedented. Meanwhile, the President has assured that the peace efforts will continue. He has appealed to all sections of the society to be patient at this hour.

The air strikes in the north and east cause great sorrow and misery to people. Such tit for tat acts can only intensify confrontations. Both parties should come to the negotiating table to alleviate the sufferings of the people!.
