K.Veeramany, the leader of Dravidar Kalagam, a powerful leader in Tamil Nadu, has issued a statement reiterating the need for Tamil Nadu State and the Indian Central Government to take necessary steps to save the Sri Lankan Tamils who suffer greatly from air strikes in the North-East by the Sri Lanka forces.
K.Vijayakanth-actor cum legislator –Leader of Thesiya Mutpokku Dravidian Kalagam too had raised his voice in favour of Sri Lanka Tamils. These voices and agitations from Southern India offer moral support for the Tamils in Sri Lanka. Veeramany has stressed that although Sri Lankan Tamils and Tamil Nadu Tamils are geographically separated, they have strong linguistic and cultural ties. He warned that the Tamils in South India will not stay idle and watch silently the continuation of the oppressive measures by the Sri Lankan State agains the Tamils there. He reminded that the State government of Tamil Nadu has a moral duty to exert pressure on the Central government to step in and take appropriate action to save the innocent civilians in the North-East of Sri Lanka.. He has further pointed out that any form of help to Sri Lanka by Indian Government at this juncture would be adding fuel to the fire of harassment and violence unleashed on the Tamils in the North-East. In short the message that is loud and clear is that the Tamil Nadu State and the Central government in Delhi should help the suffering Tamils and that the Centre should not extend any help to the Sri Lankan Government. Tamil Nadu is offended at the air strikes by the government forces on the North-East inhabited by Tamils. Veeramany has challenged the authority of any government, - moral or otherwise - to launch air raids on its own citizens. He has recommended that Sri Lanka should emulate the exemplary example of abstinence set by the Indian government in Jammu-Kashmir despite intense terrorist attacks there. He concludes that the world should be alerted to the air bombardments of innocent Tamil civilians in the North-East, and its conscience stirred. Amnesty International has strongly objected to the government's bombardment of civilian targets. It is now clear that the air strikes, the harassment of the Tamils, the oppression and violence unleashed on them, the killing of Tamils by security forces and paramilitary groups have aroused the fury of Tamil Nadu, patiently holding its breath, hoping for a settlement through the peace process. The Sinhala polity has failed to take cognisance of the fact that the clouds that gather in the political firmament of South India is detrimental to the Sri Lanka.
