Colombo, Sri Lanka: There have been numerous peace talks, meetings and conferences for the last two decades to end the ethnic crisis in Sri Lanka but they have all been dragging the resolution of the ethnic issue.
Meanwhile, the President has told the international community that the government proposes to consider sharing of powers. He has also appointed a multi ethnic committee comprising 12 members. This committee is scheduled to meet on the 11th of this month with the President in the Chair. It is expected that the committee will submit a report regarding the sharing of powers to the All Party Conference which will finally draw up a set of proposals. This is the present move of the government. The LTTE is very critical of this move and S.P.Thamilselvan, the Leader of the LTTE Political Wing has clearly stated that any proposal for sharing powers within the frame work of a unitary state will not satisfy the aspirations of the Tamil people. Therefore the government must consider the reality today and take meaningful steps without being misdirected by Sinhala chauvinism. This effort to find a lasting solution to the national question should not be dragged on any further. An English translation of the Editorial in Virakesari, a Tamil National daily, based in Colombo
