Colombo, Sri Lanka: Due to the attacks in the North during the last two days, more than 100 civilians have been killed. The government has failed to respect international humanitarian codes that civilians should not be targeted and that security of the innocent people must be ensured during wartime. The rocket attack on the Allaipity church and its neighbourhood has caused the deaths of more than 40 civilian and injured more than 50 all of whom had sought refuge in the church. It is learnt that it was with great difficulty that the injured were taken to hospitals because of the curfew imposed by the security forces in the Jaffna peninsula. The very sacred church where the people sought refuge became their graveyard due to the attack on the church. This is not the first time that schools, churches, temples and other places of worship have been targeted by them. It is reported that within twenty four hours of the attack on this church, more than sixty school going young girls , were killed following an air strike in Mullaitivu . Although the security forces tell the world that it is not their intention to target the public, the reality is that the civilians, students and refugees are the victims. It is the responsibility of the authorities to ensure the safety and the security of the innocent people in times of war. It is the bounden duty of the international community to exert necessary pressure o ensure this sacred norm. The government having committed atrocities of this nature is more concerned about denying them rather than making amends. Absolutely dreadful - these idiot goons that run the country into the ground by killing innocents. I say we pressure ignorant people around the globe to stop this madness. India for one should not be considering playing in the slaughter house. http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/sport/200608170556/308665b9 |
