Colombo, Sri Lanka: Thousands of people are facing numerous problems because of the conflicts in the North-East. A large number of Tamils and Muslims have become refugees. People in the Jaffna peninsula and the Tincomalee district complain that no relief is given to the displaced people.

There are complaints that the food relief issued to the refugees in the Muthur and Kantalai is unfit for human consumption. In the North, normal life is crippled because of shortage of food items and the price hike.

Owing to the sudden eruption of war between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE, these unfortunate people had to flee from their homes empty handed leaving behind all their belongings.

The Tamils and the Muslims in these areas face starvation on the one hand and threats to their lives on the other. Ministers and politicians must come forward to help Tamils and Muslims in this hour of need.

Immediate steps should be taken to alleviate the sufferings of the displaced on humanitarian grounds.
