Non-governmental Organizations have been rendering a great service to the people of Sri Lanka both before and after Tsunami. People were able to get relief swiftly and satisfactorily due to the untiring efforts of the employees of the NGO’s.
But it is to the nation's regret that a number of NGOs have wound up their work in this country in the face of threats to the security and safety of their employees. The network of the NGO’s stretches to all parts of the country, whether they are in army controlled areas or LTTE controlled areas. The relief and assistance undertaken by the NGOs reach the victims faster and more satisfactorily than the services of the public sector. The International community has expressed a grave concern over the threats at and the violence on the employees of the NGOs. The French Embassy has issued a statement expressing grave concern over the prevailing situation in which NGOs are placed. The International Community is perturbed over the disappearances, abductions and killings of NGO employees. It should also be kept in mind that besides alleviating the sufferings of the people of this country, the NGOs provide employment to a number of Sri Lankans. But the prevailing situation and the dominance of gun culture have led to the withdrawal of these NGOs. It is feared that with the exit of International Red Cross Society, UN Agencies and other NGOs, the human tragedy in our country can be greater. It cannot be forgotten that the NGOs play an important role in providing relief to the victims of Tsunami and the victims of North-East war. Therefore, all sections of society must consider the seriousness of the issue and guarantee the security of the NGO employees in the larger interest of the people of Sri Lanka.
