It smacks of diabolical hocus-pocus when the International Communities react negatively to the terrorism unleashed on the Tamils by the Singhalese regime, and positively to the retaliatory attacks by the oppressed community. 1) Never in the history of Sri Lanka, had Singhalese areas ever been subjected to aerial bombing and strafing by the Singhalese armed forces:- After independence, the growth of a more assertive Singhala nationalism denying theTamils their equal rights until civil war erupted in the 1980s, fanned the flames of ethnic division between Tamils pressing for self-rule, and the chauvinistic Singhalese government. Since 1983, over the last 23 years to date, in the war that ensued between the armed forces and the Tamil militants within the Tamil territories, churches, temples, schools, refugee camps, houses and business establishments were bombed indiscriminately and demolished. Unarmed Tamil civilians in tens of thousands were killed, wounded, maimed or mangled including children, while in thousands children were orphaned and men and women were widowed, in the North-East. Furthermore, other tens of thousands had been displaced from their legally owned properties because of the mushrooming of the army camps by force, in the Tamil territories.
When 13 Singhalese soldiers were killed in a retaliatory attack in
Jaffna by the LTTE during Black July 1983, in Colombo and other
Singhalese areas a racial genocide erupted and in the holocaust that
followed, properties of unarmed Tamil civilians were looted, set on
fire and destroyed with the killing of well over 3000 Tamils. Atrocities unleashed in the Tamil territories include three-prong combined attacks by the armed forces comprising army, navy and the air force, involving firing, aerial strafing, cannonade and shelling.
It has to be emphasized that, even during the insurgencies of the
Singhalese JVP extremists, the armed forces of the government never
resorted to such tactics in the Singhalese areas, in consideration of
the safety of the Singhalese civilians from which alone, it could be
adduced to be conclusive that the Tamils are treated as second class
citizens even within their own territories by the hegemonic Singhalese
with a xenophobic attitude. Government of Sri Lanka should grant a level of autonomy to the Tamils. Very similar successful situations had been seen throughout the world. Places like Quebec in Canada, Wales and Scotland in Great Britain are all part of their Federal Nations but have significant autonomy.
Tamils
have a very legitimate desire, as anybody else would, to control their
own lives, to rule their own destinies, and to govern themselves in
their homeland, in the areas they have traditionally inhabited and to
be independent, as they were before the advent of Colonial rulers in
the year 1505.
The purpose of any agreement being framed, parties involved signing,
international communities witnessing, subscribing, attesting and
certifying with the coverage of the mass media are all lost, if it is
not adhered to the very letter.
But they
do not at all take any actions or initiatives to be constructive to
thwart the atrocities of the Sri Lankan government wielded against the
Tamils and stop the mass killings of Tamils by bombing and shelling
in the Tamil territories.
If the international communities were smart enough, cultivation and
fishing in the Tamil territories in general and the LTTE controlled
areas in particular would not have been affected irreparably causing
untold hardship to those who lived on them. International communities in a perpetual manner and in a peculiar way lay stress, and harp on labelling the freedom struggle of the LTTE to its political aspirations as terrorism.
Peace Monitors to-ing and
fro-ing between the warring parties are there to expose the
perpetrators to the whole world, by bearing witness as to which party
led to the initiation of blatant violation of the Cease-fire Agreement. Terrorist Laws are framed by the International powers only to check the so called international terrorists whom they have augmented by terrorizing the weaker nations, who now in return pose a threat to them internationally just like a home reared ram daring to gore the chest.
Those who are in search of terrorists must go behind those who indulge
in blowing up civilian planes, bombing hospitals, buildings, derailing
trains, etc, etc, internationally. It smacks of double standards and hypocrisy, when the Co-Chairs (of the Tokyo Donor Conference for Sri Lanka Peace Process comprising the United States, the European Union, Japan, and Norway), stipulate in common that, both parties should cease hostilities immediately, and return to the negotiation table.
They know very well that, the LTTE is
always ready, but the Government which backtracks on the peace process
is not ready with its hawkish policies. If in fact the International communities are to end the conflict, they will directly or through their representatives hold discussions with both the parties instead of only one they are favouring, and foster a congenial situation to spearhead the peace process in strict adherence to the Cease-fire Agreement from where it was interrupted.
To be
untruthful to what they say to the Tamils, insincerely their elected
representatives of the legislative assembly or militant group which
struggles for their aspirations are all neglected in the discussions
without being given any chance to attend. Joint naval patrols are being conducted in certain key and vulnerable areas. India had provided military training to the top army brasses of Sri Lanka in Indian defence colleges and shared military and naval intelligence with the Sri Lankan armed forces, especially the Navy.
And also it has transpired that India has
gifted indigenously made Indra radars. Kfir jet (bomber plane) built by the Israelis, is one among the arsenal used by the Sri Lankan government to bomb Tamil villages. It has been used by Sri Lankan government since 1998, and it caused several Tamils to lose their lives. SLAF used the ARGENTINIAN PUKARA BOMBERS, as well as Russian MIGS for bombing previously. Kfir (bomber plane) is used by nations such as Israel, US, Ecuador, Colombia, and Sri Lanka. In spite of the fact that Sri Lankan government is well known for its human rights violations, US approved Israel to sell this disastrous weapon under licence to Sri Lanka, only to annihilate the Sri Lankan Tamil community.
Under the patronage of super powers by being a pet in their hands
already well equipped, Sri Lankan government roams around freely, and
commits worst terrorism in Tamil homeland without being checked, until
the Tamil community is exterminated gradually but steadily. To be unbecoming of their calibre, standard and status, International communities with vested interest, under the subterfuge of peacemakers pretend to be unaware still, that Sri Lanka a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country with a diverse and rich culture, has a constitution to impose the will of the hawkish Singhalese majority on the Tamil minority.
Sri Lankan Constitution emphasises that, only a Buddhist Singhalese
could be the ruler, Buddhism could be the State religion, Singhalese
could be the official language, Buddha statues could be erected at
random anywhere in the island, colonization of Tamil areas by
Singhalese could be done at State expense, and a contrived
standardization procedure to enter higher education could be enforced
to benefit the Singhalese with the suppression of Tamil children who
thrive on education, while on the sly the past historical records or
the archaeological evidences of the country are tampered with
surreptitious interpolations to be advantageous to the Singhalese
community.
His Excellency the President (Mahinda Rajapakse) on his determination
to capture power in 2005, jettisoned all the aspirations of the Tamils
for peace by prioritizing war, with his own ideology called Mahinda
Chinthanaya, which emphasizes, no Norway, no federal constitution, no
right to Homeland, no self-determination, no nation-hood for Tamils, no
PTOMS, no recognition of anyone as sole partner in negotiation and no
Oslo as venue for talks and bagged the coveted post with a combination
of circumstances, his hawkish stance against the Liberation Tigers of
Tamil Eelam, and solid backing from Jathika Hela Urumaya the party of
the Buddhist monks and the Marxist-nationalist party Janatha Vimukti
Peramuna.
Existences and independence had been recognized of UN Member States
like Israel, Bangladesh and so on in the past or East Timor from
Indonesia in year 2002, State of Eritrea from Ethiopia on 24 May 1993,
Atoll of Atafu the last colony of New Zealand with not even 1500 people
in March 2006, and Republic of Montenegro from Serbia and Montenegro on
3 June 2006. France ended its bitter colonial war in Algeria by handing over control of that country to the terrorist Front de liberation National. Africa`s apartheid regime had to talk to the African National Congress rebels it had characterized as terrorists. Britain negotiated its pullout from Palestine with a Zionist movement that included terrorists. Israel has negotiated prisoner exchanges with organizations, such as Hezbollah, that it considers terrorists.
In Sri Lanka, which is 65,610 sq.km approximately, we can have two
States, to conform to the accepted International norms and standard,
without contravening the United Nations Charter.
Further, they do not even hesitate to stray
into the Tamil territories yearning for sexual relations under coercion
or to cast lewd remarks under the guise of searching for hidden bombs.
Moreover, they have not released yet the
humanitarian aid personnel of TRO whom they had abducted nearly eleven
months ago and their fate is not known still. Set as favorite Bookmark Comments (3)

Thank you so much for a well-written and informative article. There is absolutely no doubt that the Sinhalese regime in Sri Lanka has repeatedly violated the 2002 Ceasefire Agreement with the full support of the international community. How do we hold our world leaders accountable for the consequences of their misguided and genocidal policies toward the Tamils of Eelam? Im already writing letters on the oppression of the Tamils to members of parliament and civic leaders in various western countries but I would appreciate guidance on what else I can do with this information. |
| Neil Armstrong you could approach Larry King,Oprah Winfrey and get the Tamils to use the media to voice their grieviences. These shows can get to the people not Govts which have a vested interest.Get Tamils to tell their stories about the cruelty of the SL Govt and get the people power going. |
| I watch minimal TV & have little respect for Oprah & Larry King and also don't live in the land of the dumb yanks. But thanks for the suggestions - I will look for similar personalities in Australia/NZ. |
