It is encouraging that the peace talks between the government and the LTTE are about to begin, although there is a lack of understanding between the two parties, consequent to the bitter experiences following he violence in the North-East.
Human problems and the humanitarian crisis should be the priority at any talks. These issues are so urgent to be addressed in view of the human tragedy in the peninsula. S.P.Thamilselvan, the LTTE Political Wing Leader has already indicated that saving the people of Jaffna from their suffering will be given the utmost importance at the Geneva Talks.
The suffering of the people of Jaffna is due to scarcity of essential commodities and medicines, milk foods for infants and lack of transport facilities. The government must come forward to solve these problems immediately on humanitarian ground.
The international community has approached our problem with dedication. The people of Sri Lanka also must work in the same spirit. An atmosphere must be created to enable the people of the North-East to live without suffering and in peace. Therefore, both parties must consider the present talks as an opportunity to bring optimum benefits to the people.
