The hopes of the people have been shattered with the failure of the Geneva Peace Talks. It is really a misfortune.

Political observers predicted this failure of the talks in view of the fact that both parties went to the negotiating table due to the pressure exerted by the international community.

The LTTE insisted on its demand to re-open the A9 highway to alleviate human suffering, while the government refused to do so stating that the closure is important for security reasons.

LTTE has accused the government of refusing to re-open the A9 highway on humanitarian grounds and blamed the government for the failure of the talks. On the other hand, the government does not consider that the Talks was a failure and stated that they have to go a long way to solve the problem.

Minister Rohitha Bogalagama has stated that the government will respond early regarding the LTTE’s request. It is important to resolve the humanitarian problems without any further delay. If there cannot be a consensus on a trivial issue, how can the main ethnic problem be resolved?

In the larger interest of the people, both parties must find a peaceful resolution without delay. Otherwise the international community will be frustrated.
