Increasing transport crisis PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 04 November 2006

Increase in transport crisis is a big nuisance to the people of Colombo. The number of vehicles on the roads is increasing tremendously, while the roads are not developed or extended to meet the needs.

Due to the traffic jam, people spend two to three hours to reach a small distance.

On the other hand, people are delayed due to several checkpoints in the city put up for security reasons. Then there is a problem of parking vehicles on either side of the road.

In the mean time, several roads have been washed off following the recent heavy rains. The roads are not properly maintained and repairs are not regularly done.

During the rainy seasons, there is water logging on the roads and it’s a hurdle for travelling along the road. This is perhaps due to poor drainage system and the dumping of garbage on the roadside.

Therefore Road Development Authority must take steps to solve this problem.

An English translation of the Editorial in Virakesari, a Tamil daily, based in Colombo.
