The International community is highly concerned about human rights violations in Sri Lanka. Finland has taken initiative to move a vote of censure on Sri Lanka at the meeting of the UN Human Rights Commission.

It is relevant to note that Finland raised this issue at the forum last October and charged that Sri Lanka had failed to inquire into acts of violence such as abductions, killings and so on, to bring the culprits to book and to take effective measures to stop such violence. But, the motion was not passed since the Sri Lankan government gave certain assurances to ensure that human rights will be observed.

Yet, situation has worsened in Sri Lanka since last October. International community feels that Sri Lanka doesn’t take earnest efforts to ensure human rights in Sri Lanka. India too is concerned about it.

In such a context Finland seems to be lobbying for the motion to be moved once again. Realizing the danger, Sri Lankan government seems to make tactical moves by declaring that commissions are appointed to conduct inquiries.

It is doubtful whether such commissions appointed by the government can be fair, free and deliver the goods.

India only makes lipservice and have not done anything constructive in saving the Tamils in SL. My sincere prayer is that Tamil Nadu would persuade the Indian Central Govt. to do something to stop this dastardly act by the GoSL on the Tamils.
