The dignity of the government is crumbling both at national and international levels. The set back for the security forces at Muhamalai on October 11th, the air strike in the Killinocchi Hospital killing 5 innocent civilians, the attacks on refugee camp at Vaharai killing more than 50 persons and the assassination of the TNA Parliamnetarian Raviraj have all resulted in the crumbling of the image of Sri Lankan government.
As a result, the international community has formed an impression that the law and order situation is worsening in Sri Lanka and that the government has failed to maintain law and order in the country.
The acts of violence, abductions, the demand of ransom and other atrocities in the North-East have portrayed this government as being communal and incompetent.
In this background, no one attaches any importance to the statement that the government is going to investigate into the assassination of Raviraj with the assistance of the Scotland Yard. The government lacks credibility on this score.
In the aftermath of the assassination of the Raviraj two reputed English dailies gave publicity to the government’s announcement about the investigation rather than the assassination itself. That shows the concern of these newspapers about the image of the government rather than the assassination.
This is not the first time that the President has announced about investigations that never saw the light of day. He ordered for an investigation into the killing of Vigneswaren in Trincomalee. The offenders have not been brought to book. Then there was the killing of five innocent teenage students in Trincomalee. The culprits have not been apprehended or brought to book.
Now the government gloats over an investigation with the help of the Scotland Yard over the slaying of Raviraj. The Tamils have no faith in those investigations because the government lacks credibility.
Even with the presence of reputed Scotland Yard, the investigation are not going to get off the ground, find the culprits, prosecute and punish them. It might be said that even with the presence of God Himself, the investigations are not going to be meaningful. We say this because no investigation can be fruitful if there is no will or determination on the part of the government to ensure justice and fair play in the society.
Has any one been prosecute and punished for the acts of violence in the island despite representations were being made, despite allegations were made, despite clues were given. No nothing has been done. So, how can anyone pin any faith in talks about investigations?
