Nobody seems to be worried about human deaths in the country. Situation is worsening in the North-East. Civilians and security personnel are losing their lives. This has lead to the sorry plight of the dependents of the deceased.

Five students of the college of Agriculture in Vavuniya were massacred following a claymore attack in Thandikulam in which five army men lost their lives. When Elanchelian, Vavuniya Magistrate, visited the scene of massacre in the campus of the college, wailing students told the Magistrate that the army fired and killed five of their colleges despite their explaining to them that they were students that it was a government college.

Five innocent teenage college students were earlier killed in a similar manner in Trincomalee. As a result of such cruel murders of young students, Parents are greatly disturbed. The fear psychosis is prevalent not only among the parents. We find the same fear psychosis prevailing among the Tamil student population. As a result, their studies are affected which is not a healthy sign.

It is stressed by all quarters that violence is no solution to the present crisis and that tit for tat retaliatory acts will only create more chaos. This crisis has created many problems in the Lankan society. Those who can afford have left the country. Unfortunate ones are displaced within the country. They face all sorts of problems such as food, medicines, shelter, educational employment and safety.

An English translation of the Editorial in Virakesari, a Tamil daily, based in Colombo
