The Tamil people through out the length and breadth of the globe await with anticipation the annual, traditional and historic address by Vellupillai Pirabaharan, the Leader of the LTTE on the Heroes’ day. In fact, the entire world attaches great significance to this traditional speech by Pirabaharan. The reason, obviously, is that it reflects the destiny of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. As the days close by, the concern for Sri Lanka seems to be intensifying in India. The escalation of violence in Sri Lanka and the onslaughts on the Tamil people in the North-East have triggered off a chain of reactions in Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister has to write a strong letter raising a pertinent question as to how long India could remain passive watching the unfolding violence in the neighbouring Lanka against their Tamil brethren. Feeling the pulse of the Tamil Nadu and in order to appease Dr.M.Karunanithy, Tamil nadu Chief Minister, Dr.Manmohan Singh, Indian Prime Minister had to send Shivshankar Menenon, Indian Foreign Secretary, to convey India’s grave concern to Lankan President Rajapakse. After a one hour meeting, the Indian Foreign Secretary dropped in at Chennai and called on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to brief him on the development of the Talks. According to reliable sources, India has sent a stern message to President Rajapakse to find an appropriate political solution and to give up military offensive measures in the future. The same sources also reveal that India has expressed disappointment that Lanka has not reacted positively. Meanwhile India will discuss the Tamil issue with the Lankan President Rajapakse and the opposition leader Ranil Wicremasinghe who is also expected to arrive in India on an official visit. Knowledgeable circles say that India is going to exert pressure on Rajapakse to put forward his political solution. It is unfortunate that the international community including India still reposes faith in the integrity and the commitment of the Lankan government to put forward a meaningful political solution that can accommodate the aspirations of the minority Tamils.
