“What is next?” is the question upper most in every body’s mind following the LTTE leader Pirapaharan’s Address on the Heroes’ Day. The international community is concerned that peace should not be sacrificed at any cost.

India has appealed to the Lankan government and the LTTE to resume peace talks. In his address, Pirapaharan appealed to the leaders of Tamil Nadu for their co-operation and support for the Eelam struggle.

Meanwhile, the Indian leaders have expressed concern at humanitarian assistance, food items and medicines having not reached the Tamils in the North-East.

On the other hand, there is uncertainty over the contribution by Norway and Co-chair countries in the peace process.

The reality is that the failure to resolve the present pressing problems of the Tamils is the cause for the human tragedy. In order to resolve the urgent problems of the Tamils, A9 highway must be re-opened, food provisions must be sent to the North-East and the transport facilities must be improved.

We reiterate that only by ending humanitarian sufferings that a lasting peace can be ensured.

An English translation of the Editorial in Virakesari, a Tamil daily, based in Colombo
