The canker of corruption has penetrated into all layers of society. There is corruption in the every walk of life. As a result, the ordinary people suffer very much.

What is disturbing is that it is the politicians who are accountable for corruption in today’s society. Politics has become a business and corruption has raised its ugly head in the political arena. In the past, the leaders who entered politics never had an eye on wealth. They were committed to the upliftment of the society. Most of the politicians of the past sacrificed their wealth in the service of the people. They led a simple life and served the people.

But today, it is different. The reality is that those who indulge in politics are keen on making profits earning wealth and leading a life of luxury. That is the reason why politicians are corrupted. When politicians are corrupted, it penetrates all levels of the society as there is nobody to question it.

According to the commissioner of bribery and corruption, 68% o the public servants are accused of corruption. Certain heads of departments, heads of schools and police officials get bribes through a third party.

It is rarely that the affected people complain to the authorities. The general belief in the society is that nothing can be done in any government department without offering a bribe. In fact a former President made an allegation some years ago that there is corruption even in the judiciary.

This unhealthy trend can be attributed to the quality of the society . There is no respect for human values. We hope there will be a better political culture in the future.
