People in the peninsula undergo unbearable misery. There is a food shortage. People are unable to get their share of food. There is a scarcity for essential commodities. Prices are soaring high. People cannot afford to buy.
On the other hand A9 highway remains closed .As a result of the closure of the A9 highway a lot of problems have surfaced. Their miseries are unbearable.
In addition a viral fever has affected the people. Diseases associated with the rainy season are also on the rise. There is a scarcity of medicines. Patients are unable to get the necessary medicines. They are unable to buy even Panadol.
Rev.Fr.Saundaranayagam, Bishop of Jaffna has made appeals repeatedly to save the people from a great disaster and a great tragedy. He made appeals to the government. He made appeals to the international community. But no meaningful steps have been taken either by the government or by the international community.
Reports state that an identical situation prevails in Vaharai in the east. Tamil people in the North and the East thereby suffer immensely. Humanitarian aid must reach them. They must be saved from human tragedy.
The government should not consider this humanitarian problem as a prestige issue. People cannot be driven to starvation for the sake of the prestige of the government. Therefore the government must take immediate steps to solve the humanitarian problems in the North-East.
