Tamil community mourns the death of Anton Balasingham, Philopher and LTTE ideologue. He was one who dedicated his life totally for the struggle of the Tamil people for their freedom.

For over thirty years he had been the LTTE strategist. He had been addressing his mind regarding the right to self determination of the Tamil community.

Balasinghams parents were from Batticola. He was born in Karavetti in the North. He is an old student of St.Patrick’s college Jaffna. He served as a deputy editor of Virakesari from 1960 to 1970. Thereafter he served in the British High Commission in Colombo. He participated in all the peace talks held since 1985 on behalf of the LTTE.

Balasingham is affectionately and respectfully called ‘Anna’ by LTTE leader Prabaharan. He had written two books namely ‘War and Peace’ and ‘Freedom’. In these books he described his experiences in the freedom struggle.

Within a few hours of his passing away, LTTE leader Prabaharan mourned his death and released a statement in which he says that Balasingham was a tower of strength to him as a political strategist in diplomatic moves in their freedom struggle. He laments that Bala is no more for him to look for solace and for guidance. He has honoured Balasingham by awarding him the title of ‘Voice of the nation’ .

Anton Balasingham was committed to find a solution whereby the right to self determination of the Tamils is guaranteed and whereby the Tamil people can live with dignity and in peace. That was his dream. May the Tamils gain their rights and may his dream come true.

An English translation of the Editorial in Virakesari, a Tamil daily, based in Colombo
