Tamil people mourn the death of Dr.Anton Balasingham, the LTTE ideologue who had made valuable contribution to the struggle of the Eelam Tamil people for more than three decades.

That he passed away at a crucial time when the peace efforts are under serious threats saddens the Tamil people. He was one who played a key role in telling the international community the difficulties of the Tamils and their political aspirations.

Although he was an ideologue of the LTTE that is committed to an armed struggle, diplomats and most of the political analysts respected him as a moderate leader. He justified the cause of armed struggle by the Sri Lankan Tamils in the back ground of the plight of the Tamils.

In all the peace talks that he participated, he very clearly and effectively put forward the problems of the Tamils and the violence unleashed on them in order to win the support and the sympathy of the international community.

Even when he was suffering from a serious ailment, he regretted that he was unable to give of his best to his people. He mentioned that his illness was a personal tragedy and that the agony that he was undergoing was a mere pebble when compared with the ocean of sufferings undergone by the Tamil people.

An English translation of the Editorial in Thinakkural, a Tamil daily, based in Colombo
