Amnesty international has charged that the UN has not acted with responsibility in regard to the human rights violations in Sri Lanka. The present plight of the people in Sri Lanka as a result of human rights violations has angered, Madam Irni Kahn, the Secretary General of the London based Amnesty International.
She has stated that the UN Human Rights Council has failed to act with courage to deal with the violations of human rights in Sri Lanka.
The time at which Amnesty International made such a serious charge is of much relevance. This charge has been made by a responsible and reputed body at a time when UN Human rights council is holding its 4th session.
She has stated although that killings, abductions etc are taking place in Sri Lanka with impunity, Un Human Rights Council is dormant in dealing with the situation. The UNHCR acts weakly in regard to the Sudan affairs. Even in respect of Israel, UNHCR has not acted actively, vigorously and strategically.
She further explained that as a result of the UNHCR being inactive and dormant, the credibility of the entire UN has become questionable.
She has gone a step further and recommended that without confining it self to a political approach, UNHCR must chalk out a strategy to save the people from human rights violations and to protect them.
It was in this background that Mahinda Samarasinghe, the Minister of Human rights and Disaster management invited two UN officials to personally visit Sri Lanka and ascertain the prevailing situation.
Following this invitation made by Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, there are criticisms made against him for paving the way for interference by external forces.
In any event, Sri Lanka is put on the dock in regard to human rights violations.
