Tissa Attanayake, the General Secretary of the UNP, states that the government must take a serious cognizance of the security situation in the country and present a political solution to resolve the national crisis without dilly dallying.

There have been divergent views expressed both within the county and outside regarding the LTTE’s air attack on the Katunayake air base.

The government has stated that it is a serious threat to the security of the country. President Rajapakse warns that war planes in the hands of the LTTE are a threat to the international community and therefore appeals to the international community to extend support to fight terrorism.

Since the national crisis has not been approached in the right manner and since the problem has not been resolved for more than two decades, there have been deaths, blood shed and displacement. Therefore, this national problem must be resolved without any further delay taking into account the political and social reality.

Although the Ceasefire Agreement of 2002 brought hope for peace, subsequent events have shattered all hopes. The country is plunged in a war. 100,000’s of people have been displaced. A sense of fear had enveloped the country. Trade and investment have been affected. Fishing and agriculture have been crippled. 1000’s of farmers and fishermen are unable to earn a livelihood.

Therefore, the military approach must be eschewed and steps must be taken to re-commence negotiations then only all the people, particularly the Tamil people can live in peace.
