The centre for Policy Alternative had released the results of social indicator and confidence Index. This reveals the unhealthy trend that prevails in the political arena of the south in particula and the country in general following the war between the security forces and the LTTE and the human rights violations. In the south, there has suddenly emerged support to find a military solution to the national problem. More than half the Sinhalese (59,200) who took part in the survey are for a military solution.A majority of the Sinhalese feel that President Rajapakse has the capability to take forward military action against the LTTE. But, the Upcountry Tamils and the Muslims are uncertain about it. Majority of the Sinhalese feel that the new emergency regulations are necessary for the government’s efforts against terrorism. Majority Sinhalese are not prepared to believe that the Tamils are affected by the Emergency Regulations. They express satisfaction that the government has taken necessary steps to safeguard human rights, while the Upcountry Tamils hold the opposite view. What is disturbing is that the Sinhala people are not perturbed over the human rights violations, while the international community has expressed great concern. There have been deliberate propaganda in the south to make the Sinhala believe in a military solution. The leadership of the south has failed to convince the Sinhala people of the need to find a political solution. A considerable section of the media in the south is also responsible for this unhealthy trend. Unless there is a change basically, the media cannot contribute towards the creation of healthy politics in the south.

It is strange that the government conducted survey shows that the Singhalese people are in favour of the current military solution to the ethnic conflict. Either the government has made the survey appear to look that way (it is a known fact that the government had repeatedly engaged in hoodwinking tactics in the past; they are good at giving false figures and altering statistics and) or if it is true that the Singhalese people support the military solution, then by any standards, they must be one of the most uncultured, uneducated and barbaric people in the globe. No civilized person in the right frame of mind no matter whatever his background is will opt for military option. Again, if the survey is true and that is what the people want, it is crystal clear that the two communities cannot co-exist. This is proof that the war waged in the North and East is not against the LTTE but against the Tamil people. If this is what the government and the Singhalese people want, then the Tamils will have no option but to go for a separate Tamil Eelam nation. One other thing, the Srilankan leadership is also well aware of another fact that if the Tamils are to have a separate state, the prosperity and progress of Tamil Eelam will be so swift that their government and the Singhalese people will in time, be left far behind. |
