Civil Monitoring Commission held a meeting in Colombo recently highlighting the disappearances in the country. A large number of relatives of the disappeared attended the meeting.
This is the first of a series of meetings scheduled to be held all over the country to create public awareness of the human rights in the country. The participants carried pictures of their dear ones who had disappeared.
It was a rather touching to see, weeping women, whose husbands have disappeared, parents whose sons have disappeared and sons and daughters, whose parents have disappered.
The meeting at which Ranil Wickremasinghe UNP Leader, Mano Ganeshan, Colombo Parliamentaian Srithunga Jayasuriya, Leader of the Civil Monitoring Committee, Suresh Premachandren, TNA Parliamentarianand Ravi Karunanayake, UNP Paliamentarian addressed depicted the seriousness of the human rights violations in the country.
Mr.Wickremasinghe charged that the government has failed to take measures to put an end to abductions and disappearances. The speakers alleged that the security forces and paramilitary groups were responsible for these human rights violations.
It is obvious that political parties such as JVP are silent over these human rights violations. The entire community must rally together to fight against human rights violations.
While the international community is concerned about human rights violations, the government dismisses it as a mere propaganda.
We regret to state that it is not a healthy move.
