Tamils and Sinhalese celebrate the New Year traditionally by visiting temples and by performing prayers. With the dawn of the New Year, the people are seriously concerned about the challenges that they face and what the future has in store for them.
The refugees in the east numbering 150, 000 are faced with a serious challenges struggling for basic facilities. Words cannot describe the sufferings of the Tamil people. On top of everything they are affected by natural disaster– the heavy rains.
It is by striving to resolve the national conflict through negotiations that we can bring peace to the country. It is only then, human tragedy can be brought to an end.
It is the concern of the international community that peace talks must be re-commenced to ensure peace. It is the view of all peace loving citizens of the country. Even the major opposition party, the UNP, is committed to it. It is only a handful of communal parties that are opposed to peace talks.
Let us pray and hope for the best in the New year that has dawned.
