Although the government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE frequently talk about peace, the news reports confirm that the country is moving towards a war. Political analysts observed that the majority of the Sinhala people prefer war and that the government priorities war although it talks about putting forward a political package according to the results of the recent survey. It is in this background that a note of warning has been issued that an extension of war in the north-east can lead to disaster. Jegan Perera, the Dirctor of National Peace Council, has cautioned the country on this issue. He states that the government which pronounces that it has crushed the LTTE in the east, wants to continue the war and that the government’s next target is the north. He has cautioned that if the government engages in a war in the north, there can be a serious human tragedy unheard of in the history. His is not a lone voice. His voice is shared by several other responsible men and women. As far as the political package of the government is concerned, even their leadership is not very clear about it. One section of the government talks of peace and the political package, while another section insists on defeating the LTTE through a war. Obviously there are two view points expressed by the leadership of the government. Therefore, a doubt lingers in the minds of the Tamil people whether the government that has come to power with the support of Sinhala Buddhist extreme forces will ever put forward a reasonable solution to the national conflict. The international community must exert adequate pressure for the government to give up its war efforts and move towards a negotiated political solution.

There was never a time since independence, any government in power was genuinely interested in giving the Tamils their rights or putting forward a credible political package covering the aspirations of the Tamils. Certainly the leadership did not have any understanding of the situation nor has the political will to present an honourable package. Even now, the government talks of peace package and at the same time committing all forms of attrocities. They threaten all international bodies, peace brokers and human rights watchdogs to keep mum and pretend not to notice whatever attrocities they are doing and to tag along with them in giving false propagandas to the outside world. Therefore, there will always be a lingering doubt in the minds of the Tamil people whether the Singhala government supported by the Sinhala Buddhist extremists will ever put forward a reasonable solution to the national conflict. In the last sixty years they were not able to put forward a reasonable solution. The only thing that the government and the Tamils have is the CFA where things of conflict have been properly spelt out and all that has to be done is to put these things right; any new proposals can be added or taken out with the agreement of both parties. If the government is not willing to settle things in correct prospective, not only will the Tamils but also the International community think the government has ulterior motives behind their back and are not sincere in their approach to finding a solution; how else are they going to deal with the situation. The only thing the GoSL knows is committing attrocities trying out the jungle law which will never work. Therefore as things stand now, with the current government in power there appear to be no solution. |
