Although the number of killings of civilians and journalists has been increasing in the country in recent times and the international community has expressed grave concern over this unhealthy trend, no concrete or constructive steps have been taken either to stop the killings or to bring the culprits to book.

It is unfortunate that journalists are targeted. It must be realized that journalists are only performing their duties. That Sri Lanka is considered as a country, where journalists face serious threats in the discharge of their professional duties, has brought disrepute to the country.

25 year old Selvarajah Rajivarman, the staff reporter of Uthayn News paper, was killed by unidentified gun men in Jaffna town, while he was returning home after work on a bicycle. Likewise, several other journalists had been killed at a young age.

Free Media Movement and other Journalists’ Associations have strongly condemned this brutal attack.
