Whenever there are damages or disasters in the south, the victims are provided with compensation or relief without delay. The relief is rushed to their door step. But, on the contrary, when the agriculturalists or workers in the north-east suffer from damages or destruction, the authorities over look their problems and sufferings. In addition, they are subjected to harassment. Such discrimination by the authorities create a sense of frustration among the Tamil people.
In the north-east, the farmers are unable to engage in their agricultural activities without a sense of fear. So, also the fisher folk too are unable to go to the seas in pursuance of their occupation. They are all confined to their homes without any source of income.
As a result, they live in poverty. The families of these farmers and fishermen and their dependents face starvation and illnesses. The
Tamil people have genuine grievances that the successive governments of Sri Lanka extend a step motherly treatment to them merely because they belong to a particular ethnic group. That is why there are conflicts and confrontations leading to violence.
Every time there are conflicts or clashes, it is the innocent Tamil civilians who are seriously affected.
Therefore, we appeal that a solution should be found to the pressing problems of the Tamils on humanitarian grounds.
