Following a worsening human rights situation in the country, the international community is increasingly concerned about it. Most of the countries have already expressed their displeasure to the government about human rights violations in the country.

Britain has suspended its aid to Sri Lanka. In fact, Britain insists that the issue of relief can be renewed only when the human rights situation in the country improves. This decision was taken following a debate in the House of Commons last week.

None can deny the fact that the Sri Lankan government has failed in respecting human rights, ensuring the rule of law and acting justly. It is in this back ground that Britain was constrained to take such a decision. This brings disrepute to the government of Sri Lanka.

The sudden involvement by Britain in Sri Lankan affairs can go a long way in resolving the national issue in the country. It is considered a salutary move by Britain rather belatedly to find a solution to the ethnic crisis.

At a juncture, when the peace efforts have been derailed and when there are confrontations which make it impossible for the warring parties to recommence talks, Britain has come forward to summon a summit meeting of the representatives of the Sri Lankan government, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the Norwegian government, which has been brokering the peace moves.

An all party group of the House of Commons has been formed to forge these moves. All parties and all sections of the society must extend their support to make this a reality.

Does he mean Britain, if so then I believe Britain has a long history of quiet diplomacy and this is what is needed rather than loud overt gestures. The LTTE and the Sri Lankan Governement have highly intelligent individuals in both camps ... if there was a political will then they would find a way...
