The cost of living is once again escalates. As a result the people face many economic problems. Since cost of living shoots up, while there is no corresponding increase in their income, people are unable to bear the burden.

The price of wheat flour has gone up by rupees 3.50. The bakery owners have increased the price of bread by Rs.2. As far as Sri Lanka is concerned, most of the people depend on wheat flour and bread for their staple food. It is a pity that at every turn the price of flour and bread are increased.

No body seems to be worried about the plight of common man who lives below the poverty line. Immediately after the fuel prices went up, the bus and train fares too were increased.

Likewise, prices of all commodities are increasing. It is only during the election times that there are talks about the problems of the people, their living conditions and poverty alleviation. Once the elections are over, these are all forgotten?

People are displaced following floods and war. Due to these disasters, they have lost all their properties and their earnings. They are unable to cope up with the rise of the cost of living.

Therefore, the government must take measures to increase people’s income. It is only then the people can cope up with the rise in cost of living.

The Srilankan government has succeeded in one thing: increasing the prices of essential commodities and sucking the blood from the ordinary citizens and hiking fuel prices, increasing fares for transportation and in overall causing sufferings to the people.

While other countries are making efforts to erradicate poverty and raise the standard of peoples' lives, the Srilankan government is good at pushing their people to live below the poverty line.
