The United National Party, in its statement released to the Press states that after every military action against the LTTE, the Defence Ministry and the media stated that the military strength of the LTTE had been crushed. But, the reality today is that they have become stronger. They have demonstrated to the world that they are the only terrorist organization in the world that has an air force.

The UNP further states that the defence Secretary is unable to under stand the basic concept of using the military force for political targets. He is mainly responsible for the present military set back. As a result, the Rajapakse government has strengthened the LTTE and weakened the government at the negotiating table.

The boast of successes in the military onslaughts is only to appease the extreme forces in the south and to get support from to Buddhist Sinhala majority.

UNP charges that the Rajapakse government has failed to rally international support against the LTTE. Earlier, the UNP committed for the peace talks and to find a solution through negotiations. But, on the other hand, it had a secret agenda to weaken the LTTE and crush it. The UNP is worried that the Rajapakse government has shattered their strategies.

The UNP has expressed concern that by sidelining the peace moves, pursuing a military agenda, permitting human rights violations and suppressing the media freedom, the Rajapakse government has brought disrepute to the government of Sri Lanka and the country.
